How to Choose a Men's Fragrance: Oriental, Fougère, Leather or Oud?
Share
Choosing a men's fragrance is one of the most personal decisions a man can make — and one of the most confusing. Walk into any department store and you will be confronted with hundreds of bottles, each promising something different, most of them described in language that tells you almost nothing useful. Woody. Fresh. Intense. What does any of that actually mean?
The answer lies in understanding scent families — the broad categories that group fragrances by their dominant character. Once you understand which family speaks to you, choosing a fragrance becomes significantly easier. You stop guessing and start knowing.
At Hazel Glow, every fragrance in the HG Homme collection belongs to one of four families: oriental, fougère, leather or oud. Here is what each one means, who it suits, and how to find yours.
The Oriental Family — Warm, Spiced and Deeply Sensual
Oriental fragrances are built around warmth. They tend to open with spice — cardamom, cinnamon, saffron, pepper — and settle into rich, resinous bases of amber, vanilla, tonka bean and musk. They are the fragrances that feel most intimate on the skin: warm, enveloping and deeply personal.
Oriental fragrances are not subtle. They are built for presence — for the man who wants a fragrance that develops throughout the day and leaves a lasting impression. They perform best in cooler temperatures, making them the natural choice for autumn and winter, and for evening occasions where depth and longevity matter.

Within the oriental family, there is significant variation. A masculine oriental like Odin leads with a floral heart — jasmine, violet, lily — over a warm base of amber, patchouli and vanilla: sophisticated and classic. A spiced leather oriental like Tanios opens with saffron and thyme and settles into suede and leather: bold, distinctive and impossible to ignore. A sweet oriental like Nereus layers a complex seven-note floral heart over a base of tonka bean, myrrh, guaiacwood and vanilla: rich, enveloping and extraordinarily complex. And a spiced woody oriental like Imperium opens with apple and citrus before deepening into cinnamon, cloves and a dry base of vetiver, cedarwood and olivewood: authoritative, dry and deeply masculine.
Oriental is for you if: you want a fragrance with genuine depth and longevity, you prefer warmth over freshness, and you want something that evolves on your skin throughout the day.

The Fougère Family — Cool, Aromatic and Effortlessly Masculine
Fougère — pronounced foo-ZHAIR, French for fern — is one of the oldest and most celebrated families in men's fragrance. It does not actually smell of ferns; the name refers to a classic accord built around lavender, oakmoss and coumarin that has defined masculine perfumery since the late 19th century. Modern fougères have evolved considerably, but the character remains: cool, aromatic, green and unmistakably masculine.
Where oriental fragrances are warm and enveloping, fougères are cool and composed. They open with freshness — citrus, bergamot, herbs — and settle into earthy, mossy bases that feel grounded and natural. They are the fragrances of confidence without effort: the scent of a man who does not need to announce himself.
Fougères are the most versatile of the four families. They work across seasons, suit daytime and evening wear equally well, and tend to be the most approachable entry point for men who are new to fragrance.
Untamed is the HG Homme fougère: bergamot and mandarin opening into geranium, lavender and olibanum, settling into patchouli, moss, amber and musks. Cool, unflappable and entirely its own.

Fougère is for you if: you prefer fresh, aromatic fragrances over warm or sweet ones, you want something versatile enough for everyday wear, and you appreciate classic masculine fragrance with a modern edge.

The Leather Family — Dark, Refined and Unapologetically Bold
Leather fragrances occupy a unique space in men's perfumery. They are not for everyone — and that is precisely their appeal. Built around the dry, animalic character of leather notes, often combined with dark spice, smoke and resinous base notes, leather fragrances are the most distinctive and immediately recognisable of the four families.
The leather note in fine fragrance does not smell of a leather jacket fresh from the shop. It smells of something older and more considered: the inside of a fine car, a well-worn book, a tailored coat that has been lived in. It is a note that carries history and quiet authority.
Leather fragrances tend to be bold openers that settle into something deeply personal on the skin. They reward patience — the dry down is where they reveal their true character — and they perform exceptionally well in cooler temperatures and for evening occasions.
Obsidian is the HG Homme leather fragrance: cardamom opening into leather and jasmine sambac, settling into amber, moss and patchouli. Dark, warm and unapologetically bold.

Leather is for you if: you want a fragrance that commands attention without demanding it, you are drawn to dark, sophisticated accords, and you want something genuinely distinctive that no one else in the room is wearing.

The Oud Family — Ancient, Complex and Genuinely Extraordinary
Oud — also written oudh or agarwood — is the most prized ingredient in the history of perfumery. Formed when the Aquilaria tree becomes infected with a specific mould, oud resin develops over decades inside the heartwood of the tree. The resulting material has a scent of extraordinary complexity: smoky, resinous, slightly sweet, deeply woody and unlike anything else in the natural world. It is worth more by weight than gold.
In Western perfumery, oud has become the defining luxury note of the 21st century. In Middle Eastern and Japanese fragrance traditions, it has been revered for centuries. An oud fragrance is not simply a fragrance — it is an experience. It opens differently on every skin, develops over hours, and leaves a trail that is impossible to replicate or forget.
Midnight Oud is the HG Homme oud fragrance: cardamom and black pepper opening into a heart of oudh, frankincense, sandalwood, cedarwood, leather, patchouli and vetiver, settling into amber, tonka bean and vanilla. Rich, complex and profoundly long-lasting.

For those drawn to the oriental woody floral end of the spectrum, Lionheart takes a different approach — anchored by kyara, the rarest and most prized form of agarwood, with a bold spiced opening and an unexpected floral heart of jasmine, orchid, water lily and rose over leather, sandalwood and black amber.
Oud is for you if: you want a fragrance of genuine complexity and extraordinary longevity, you appreciate the heritage and cultural depth of Middle Eastern and Japanese perfumery, and you want something that is truly unlike anything on the high street.
